Collecting the wheat...

Posted on August 21, 2014

The dragonfly children and staff set off on a fun filled adventure this week as they went to find out a little more about where their yummy food comes from. The wheels on the bus went round and round along the road and over the bumpy field where farmer Mark and his son Harry were ready to meet us.

Flopping on the straw, burying our hands in different seeds, sitting in the tractor cab and then rolling the wheat - it was an action packed afternoon! We heard about the different machines and watched as the combine emptied its load into the trailer before looking at the various colours, shapes and sizes of grain. We were able to make a connection between the grain and the things we might buy in the shops as the farmers showed us bottles of oil, loaves of bread, porridge oats and mushy peas!

At the end of our afternoon we collected a bag of wheat from the farmyard, Leanne tells us our next stop will be the Mill to find out how we make flour before we visit the Community Bakery to discover some top baking tips. We will share more of our learning journey soon, in the meantime the next time you visit us why not look at our display of farming photographs.
