Artists Impression

Taking turns to water the plants the children noticed that their sunflower seeds were growing taller & taller and that one or two had buds about to bust open.  There was some discussion about how the flowers would look, still a little uncertain we bought a single sunflower from the florist and spent time looking a this; the petals, stem and the 'sticky' middle were the bees would go to make honey.

The children in the Dragonfly Room then looked at Van Gogh's paintings of sunflowers before creating their own.  It is always fascinating to see the different ways that children approach art and how they view objects, the features they choose to focus on and how to record them.  Some were absorbed in mixing colours to create the shades they wanted, others painted each bit separately in a rather abstract form, while a few chose to observe and then reproduce one of Van Gogh's pictures as accurately as they could.  Many of the children talked about the things they could see or what they were doing as they painted, we have recorded these thoughts alongside their pictures.

If you have the time why not pop in to view our Sunflower Gallery, it has brightened up the Dragonfly Room and we hope it will make you smile too.
