Jumbleberry Jam

Posted on August 07, 2015

This morning we were off on another adventure.....

A group of children boarded the mini bus bound for Hutton Bonville Pick Your Own Farm just north of Northallerton.  The children took their containers and we set off looking at the colour of the flags to choose which fruit we wanted to pick first.  Seeing the blue flag we knew we were on the right path for blackcurrants, though 3 of the group got waylaid picking strawberries with Stuart.

There was lots to talk about during the morning, which plants might be prickly and the masses of mini beasts.  We met some wise people along the way who told us that the "big bugs eat the little bugs to keep the fruit nice for us".

Arriving back at nursery the children had a jumble of strawberries, raspberries and blackcurrants so imagine our delight when we found the perfect recipe - Jumbleberry Jam.  Steve experimented today to perfect this, after a while a little was put aside for the all important taste test and the result... we think it is decidedly delicious.  So the plan is that next week the children will wash, sort and mix the rest of their fruit and create their own beautiful batch of jewel coloured jam which families can try with their scone and cream at our Leaver's Garden Party later this month.

Realizing there was so much to choose from at the farm the children are heading back next week to gather some broad beans and other goodies for our lunch.  Karen M. & Leanne
