A Few Minutes to Remember

Posted on November 11, 2015

Today we introduced Remembrance Day to the children in our Dragonfly Room, we felt it was important to recognize that the children are often curious about the abundance of poppies that appear at this time of year and that some of our parents are serving personnel.  We approached this by talking about what others do for us.  The windows were opened so the children could hear the prompt to stand in silence, though we admit being still was an altogether different challenge for this age group.

After the silence we set off for a walk through the town, the children soon spotted the large poppies on the lamp post and after again sharing their thoughts about these the children were eager to buy their own to wear throughout the day (luckily Leanne had some loose change in her pocket).  Leaving the shop with poppies in hand an elderly gentleman came to speak to our group, it meant so much to us as staff and the children to hear him compliment Incy Wincy's on the behaviour of the children and what it meant to him to see them acknowledging this special day.

The children wore their poppies with pride for the rest of the day, one little girl even wore hers the day after.  Our nursery children are fortunate to have so many opportunities open to them in Bedale and be truly involved in where we live - we love being the nursery at the heart of this community.
