Planning our Planting

Posted on February 03, 2016

Waving goodbye to Julia in December also meant waving goodbye to our Head Gardener, it didn't take long though for other staff to come forward and offer to take on the role.  Jess and Ellie are our newly appointed RHS School Gardening Co-ordinators and eager to get going they spent this morning in the greenhouse with a small group of children planting the first seeds of the season.

We believe it is important that the children see the changes in the garden over the weeks and months; that they experience it in all weathers and understand that the rain and the warmth of the sun help the plants to grow.  The children will now watch and wait to see how many of their tomato and onion seedlings appear in the coming weeks.  Meanwhile there are plenty of other jobs to do as Jess and Ellie plan the planting for the year.  Working closely with Steve they will be making sure as many of the fruit and vegetables as possible can be added to dishes on our yummy menu.

The RHS are offering their support too as we work through the gardening scheme, Jess and Ellie will be joining the experts at Harlow Carr for the day in April to get some top tips and will be sharing these with families as they begin their regular gardening club sessions in the Spring.
